Pro vs.con

Good afternoon!

I’ve made a table where the most common pros and cons concerning the  topic ‘legalization of drugs’ are mentioned. (reference: http://www.libraryindex.com/pages/2395/Legalization-ARGUMENTS-PRO-CON.html)

When I was looking for this date, I got  the impression that  politicians have their focus on a global legalization for all mankind and not on a legalization for medical appliciations. The fear of an increase of crime and violence is number one on the list for people who are against legalization. I believe that can be true when drugs are legalized “at random”; scientific data proved that there are good clinical outcomes when specific drugs are used in optimal conditions. And only these drugs must be legalized!  I’ve never understand (and never will do I guess) the excessive use of drugs and  alcohol just for pleasure. So the aim of this blog is to prove that drugs can have benefits for people with terminal diseases, rheumatoid arthritis etc. and not the legalization of drugs for recreative use!

Maybe someday (after the formation of a new government in Belgium..) there might be a law concering legalization in medical applications, but then it must be very strict and defined for all doctors and patients to keep abuse minimal.

What’s your opinion?

I’ll keep you posted!

  1. Dear Elly,

I suggest you take a look at this video (and the ones that follow):

also, consider the legalisation of Marijuana for medicinal use in the state of California, USA:
there is a shift in crime: whereas the felony used to be ‘trade and/or posession of narcotics’, it has now shifted to ‘falsification of documents’ to illegally obtain marijuana for ‘medicinal use’.
The effect is that instead of relieving the illegal atmosphere surrounding Marijuana, marijuana is still illegal and an other illegal activity (forging of documents) is stimulated.
    Net result: MORE crime.

problem UNSOLVED. Therefore you either legalise it completely or you don’t do it at all.

    • Dear,

Thanks for the reply: it are very interesting videos. It’s a remarkable point of view how he explains the econimical and moral aspects about the legalisation. I’ll try to make a new post around this subject next week.

And to comment on the ‘falsification of documents’: not only with marijuana this is the case, but with every medicin on prescription. There will always be people who abuse the “system” with or without legalisation.
And the issue of more crime can be solved by legalisation like mr. Friedman already said in his video: by making it legal, drugs become less expensive so that the drug traffic business will decrease.
Therefore I obtain for a full legalisation (of well-known proven beneficial drugs), so that patients are aware of possible side-effects and recommended doses so that they have a strict follow-up in their “healing process”.

      Regards,
      Elly

  2. hello,

Because Marijuana scores better than alcohol and other drugs at level of addictiveness, behaviour and health, doesn’t mean that Marijuana is good. Some pro’s are rather fantasy. For example the statement: “When you legalise marijuana, there will be less crime.” It’s like when we legalise murder there will be no crime at all.

Perhaps you should also mention the taboo of marijuana. The more social side of this. Some people (perhaps a lot) don’t think it’s socially acceptable.

btw search for the song “give me hope, joanna”

    • Dear,

Thank you a lot for the comment. Every drug or medicin has his side-effects, even a common aspirin which people take day in day out without thinking about possible consequences.
And the point of ‘less crime’: when you make it legal, the drug traffic business may decrease because you can buy it safe in a pharmacy with professional advice or is that too naïve to think?

I’ll take it into account if i’ll write about of the more social side of legalisation in my next posts.

      Regards,
      Elly
